The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade

UCSD INAUGURAL PRODUCTION IN THE SHEILA AND HUGHES POTIKER THEATRE

May 12 - MAY 21, 2005

The date is July 13th, 1808 and the infamous Marquis de Sade has written and directed a play commemorating the death of Jean-Paul Marat, fifteen years earlier. Using his fellow inmates from the mental asylum of Charenton as actors and under the critical supervision of the clinic’s director, de Sade challenges Marat’s call and support for the Reign of Terror that followed the French Revolution before his assassination at the hands of Charlotte Corday. This Peter Weiss Tony-Award winning and controversial play marks the UCSD Theatre and Dance Department inaugural production in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, the newest main-stage addition to the UCSD Theatre District.

As startling as MARAT/SADE appeared when it was first produced, the play continues to provoke. Without any updating, the play examines the forces behind the political revolutions which permeate present world politics, and in so doing asks fundamental questions about human nature. Are we political animals or private? How is a mob created and how does it choose its leader? Is it possible for that leader to rule the mob? Why does a mob turn violent? Is true political change possible, and at what cost to the rights of the individual?

Director STEFAN NOVINSKI is a Los Angeles-based director. Recent credits: Medea at the Theatre@Boston Court; Wreckageby Caridad Svitch for New Dramatists; Sideways Stories at South Coast Repertory; Skin of Our Teeth at the Evidence Room (LA Weekly Award, Best Revival 2003); Cosmonaut’s Last Message… (LA Weekly Awards for Direction and Production of the Year) and As I Lay Dying adapted from the Faulkner, both for the Open Fist Theatre Co. Prior to arriving in Los Angeles, Mr. Novinski served as the Associate Producer of the Big D Festival of the Unexpected at the Dallas Theatre Center. He holds an MFA from University of California, San Diego.

The latest addition to the UCSD Theatre District, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse serves as the centerpiece for a year-round theatre village designed to create a dynamic synergy between theatre artists and theatregoers.
