| Description: | By Peter Weiss Music by Richard Peaslee, Lyrics by Adrian Mitchell English version by Geoffrey Skelton Directed by Stefan Novinski UCSD INAUGURAL PRODUCTION IN THE SHEILA AND HUGHES POTIKER THEATRE May 12 - MAY 21, 2005
As startling as MARAT/SADE appeared when it was first produced, the play continues to provoke. Without any updating, the play examines the forces behind the political revolutions which permeate present world politics, and in so doing asks fundamental questions about human nature. Are we political animals or private? How is a mob created and how does it choose its leader? Is it possible for that leader to rule the mob? Why does a mob turn violent? Is true political change possible, and at what cost to the rights of the individual? Director STEFAN NOVINSKI is a Los Angeles-based director. Recent credits: Medea at the Theatre@Boston Court; Wreckageby Caridad Svitch for New Dramatists; Sideways Stories at South Coast Repertory; Skin of Our Teeth at the Evidence Room (LA Weekly Award, Best Revival 2003); Cosmonaut’s Last Message… (LA Weekly Awards for Direction and Production of the Year) and As I Lay Dying adapted from the Faulkner, both for the Open Fist Theatre Co. Prior to arriving in Los Angeles, Mr. Novinski served as the Associate Producer of the Big D Festival of the Unexpected at the Dallas Theatre Center. He holds an MFA from University of California, San Diego. The latest addition to the UCSD Theatre District, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse serves as the centerpiece for a year-round theatre village designed to create a dynamic synergy between theatre artists and theatregoers. The new Jacobs Center, along with the Mandell Weiss Center for the Performing Arts, supports the growth of the UCSD Theatre and Dance Department acclaimed Graduate Professional Theatre Training Program, large Undergraduate Major/Minor Programs, and the future Graduate Professional Dance Training Program in addition to La Jolla Playhouse’s acclaimed education and outreach programs. The Jacobs Center’s state-of-the-art SHEILA AND HUGHES POTIKER THEATRE has a flexible seating system that can be configured in myriad ways to accommodate productions, providing audiences with a stellar view every time.
