Description: KATHRYN SHEVELOW, a professor in the Literature Department, will be reading from Charlotte, her biography of the eighteenth-century actress Charlotte Charke, a colorful, courageous, and often outrageous rebel who specialized in male roles and dressed as a man off-stage, defying her society’s demands about how a woman should behave. BookList said in its starred review of Charlotte: ''This is fine theater history, but it is most notable as a biography of a woman who was true to herself.''
