Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series is a forum to provide concise, comprehensive presentations on research conducted worldwide by Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists. Join us to learn about science at Scripps and to travel the world with researchers along their paths to discovery. Birch Aquarium admission and parking are included with all lectures. The fee for each lecture is $8.

San Diego's Air: It's Not as Clean as You Think Kimberly Prather, Ph.D. Small particles in the atmosphere—clouds of ice or water droplets, salt from ocean spray, and smoke from a variety of combustion sources—play an enormous role in our daily lives, from affecting visibility and global climate change to endangering our health. Join Professor Kim Prather to find out about the latest developments in research under way at UCSD to help clean up the air in California.

Few pristine coral reefs remain in the world. Reefs full of sharks, large fishes, sea turtles and healthy corals have nearly vanished. Join Line Islands Expedition leader Enric Sala as he relates the quest for a pristine coral reef that can supply the ecological baseline needed to understand and potentially remedy mankind's impact on these fragile ecosystems.

The Life and Times of Marine Cores and Dredged Rocks: More Than a Century of Collecting at Scripps
Richard Norris, Ph.D. and Warren Smith, senior curator Join Richard Norris and Warren Smith as they recount the fascinating history of the geological collections at Scripps. Learn about their own collecting adventures as well as how deep-sea cores, seafloor rocks and many types of geological samples from all over the world help provide the basis for understanding the evolution of life, rates and characteristics of climate change and the dynamics of plate tectonic processes.
