| Description: | ISIM UCSD and CRCA Present: An Evening of Musical Tradition and Innovation Wednesday June 7, 8PM CRCA Black Box, Calit2, UCSD with::
Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Trichotomy is the collective trio of James Ilgenfritz, Steve Rush, and Kyle Bruckmann, which takes a new look at one notably under- appreciated jazz format, the chamber jazz ensemble. Featuring Oboe/English Horn as a melody instrument in the hands of Kyle Bruckmann, the rhythm section role is fulfilled by pianist Steve Rush and bassist James Ilgenfritz. The group's repertoire draws substantially from the work of saxophonist / clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre, whose led 2 great trios with unconventional instrumentation, one with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer, and the other with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow. The group also interprets the music of Anthony Braxton, the iconoclastic multi-reed virtuoso / composer / improviser who has created an immense body of work, from solo saxophone music to intricate quartet music to near-impossible large ensemble works for 100 tubas or multiple orchestras on different planets. The trio of Ilgenfritz, Rush, and Bruckmann may draw from either of these composers at any moment, but their sound is uniquely built from the unique characters of the three improvisers who make up the trio. |
