| Description: | Late-night adventures to observe elusive grunion spawning on the beaches of La Jolla are being offered by the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Grunion runs this season will be on Tuesdays, June 13 and June 27, 9:45 to 11:45 p.m. Grunions are small, silvery fish that are often left stranded on sandy beaches following certain high tides. While on the beach, female grunion bury themselves in the sand to lay eggs, while males wrap themselves protectively around the females to fertilize their eggs. Both then catch a wave to return to sea. A lecture and film on grunion will precede the moonlight beach explorations. Please bring a flashlight and jacket for cool evenings. |
