| Description: | The chimes atop Geisel Library will ring out a special premiere on Friday, June 1st at noon. The musical offering was specially written by UCSD undergraduate composer Tom Ferguson to commemorate the birthday of the late Joe Rubinger. Rubinger donated the rooftop chimes to UCSD in 1989. Mr. Rubinger was known to many as the founder of the Institute for Continued Learning (a learning program at UCSD for local retirees). In the early stages of founding ICL, Mr. Rubinger noticed that the campus didn't have a carillon (chiming clock bells) and he donated the chiming instrument, naming it the Irene Rubinger/Institute for Continued Learning Memorial Carillon. Throughout the year Scott Paulson, the University Carillonneur, takes song requests on the chimes and he also oversees a commissioning program for the carillon. Yes, there really are chimes on the roof of the library (it's not a recording.) Paulson plays song requests live on the roof of Geisel. Song requests are made by sending an e-mail to: spaulson@ucsd.edu |
