Description: Polar ice sheets are sensitive indicators of current climate and also preserve evidence of past climate conditions. Scientists studying Earth's climate history drill thousands of meters deep into ancient ice to retrieve gas bubbles trapped in ice sheets. Severinghaus will explain how gas bubbles are trapped, how they provide detailed chemical clues to the past and how they are helping to shape future climate scenarios. His presentation is part of the aquarium’s Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series. The series provides concise, comprehensive presentations of research conducted worldwide by Scripps Oceanography scientists. Scripps scientists are exploring Earth's mysteries in hundreds of projects on every continent and have been leaders in climate change research for half a century. The lecture is intended for a lay audience. Birch Aquarium admission and parking are included. Light refreshments will be served.
