| Description: | The "new queen of Cape Verdean music," Lura draws on the islands' pungent blend of trade route cultures that have created a unique musical tradition with French Afro-pop sounds, Brazilian rhythms, and earthy, traditional African music. The next generation heir to Cesaria Evora, Lura brings to her music a streetwise, urban sensuality infused with the passionate flavors of Africa. With a mix of the familiar Morna style and the little-known rhythms of Funana and Batuque, Lura has the star quality and lush voice to bring Cape Verdean music to a wider audience. The accordion-driven Funana, which Lura performs, was once considered too erotic, while Batuque movements sprang from women who beat stacks of cloth and improvised poetry, lampooning or critiquing community happenings. |
