| Description: | King Solomon’s mines were made famous by the 19th century novel of the same name. Biblical scholars and archaeologists have long speculated about whether the legend was founded on real mines. UCSD Professor Tom Levy led a research team that, in 2006, started digging through more than 20 feet of industrial copper slag debris at Khirbat al-Nahas, about 30 miles south of the Dead Sea in the region of southern Jordan known as Biblical Edom. Using digital archaeology methods and high precision radiocarbon dating, what they discovered was the largest Iron Age copper-production center in the Holy Land that dates to the 10th century B.C. - the time of David and Solomon’s reign. The recent report of this discovery in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science garnered international attention as this research represents a confluence between archaeological, scientific data and the Bible. In this illustrated lecture, Dr. Levy joins us to share more about his research and this important discovery. Tom Levy is Professor of Anthropology and holds the Norma Kershaw Endowed Chair in Ancient Israel and Neighboring Lands. He also serves as Director of UCSD’s Judaic Studies program and is Associate Director of UCSD’s Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3). Dr. Levy was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Supper Club events include a wine reception, full dinner, and Faculty Club parking in addition to the lecture. |
