Messenger RNA, or mRNA, is the genetic material that tells our bodies how to make proteins. Six decades after the discovery of mRNA in 1961, the first FDA-approved mRNA therapy arrived in the form of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in 2021. In this presentation, biochemist Katalin Karikó will explore how her research on mRNA technology led to the groundbreaking discoveries that made mRNA safe and effective for use as the first mRNA vaccine and the development of breakthrough therapeutics for incurable diseases.
