Nov 1, 2023–Nov 1, 2023 from 4:00pm–5:00pm
In the first talk of this year's two-part MilliporeSigma Lectureship series, 2021 Nobel Laureate in Physiology/Medicine Dr. David Julius (UCSF, Dept. of Physiology) presents, "Gut Feelings: Probing Mechanisms of Visceral Pain" at 4pm in the Health Sciences Education Center (HSEC) Auditorium, lower level of the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Bldg at UC San Diego.
Refreshments begin at 3:30pm in the HSEC lobby with a reception directly following the talk.
Talk description:
Pain from within is initiated by somatosensory nerve fibers that innervate and interact with specialized sensory cells within visceral organs, such as the gut or the airways. Determining the nature of these interactions is essential to understanding the mechanistic basis of protective pain that is initiated by acute noxious stimuli or maladaptive pain associated with pathophysiological conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or chronic cough.
