Virtual Panel

On April 29, a link to a live virtual panel will be distributed to those who register for this event. Registration closes April 24. There will be a welcome address by Kit Pogliano, Dean of Biological Sciences, followed by a panel of UC San Diego alumni in various fields and levels of their STEM careers. Panelists include:

  • Cayley Rice, PhD '06, Senior Mathmetician/Sensors Phenomenology, Leidos
  • Kylie Taitano '14, Software Engineer, Intuit

Virtual Networking

Step 1: On April 24, those who reigster for the event will receive an email with a survey link where you are to select your top choices of industry representatives who you'd like to network with. You must register for this event by April 24.

Step 2: You must submit the survey by April 26.

Step 3: On April 29 you will receive with the names of one to several industry industry representatives who work in STEM fields who you will have a 30-minute phone or video call.

Step 4: You will have your phone or video call any time between April 29 and June 2 with each representative who you are matched with. During that conversation, you may ask them questions about their role, much like an informational interview. It is up to you and the industry representatives you're matched with on whether or not you will continue the professional relationship after the initial call.

Industry representatives who you will have the chance to network with work at the following companies:

  • Apple
  • Booz Allen Hamilton
  • Illumina
  • Intuit
  • Janssen Pharmaceuticals
  • Leidos
  • Pfizer
  • Resmed
  • Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
  • Tandem Diabetes Care
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific

Program goal: The goal is for participants to expand their sense of the critical impact that females make in STEM roles, and to gain insight into the challenges they might face as females in these industries and how female STEM professionals have worked to overcome such challenges.

Program learning outcome: We hope participants will walk away with an evolving sense of purpose and passion for the field they are pursuing, or gain knowledge that will inform the career path they pursue. We also hope participants will leave with a realistic sense of diversity matters in STEM fields, and ideas and tools to overcome them.

Finally, we hope participants will make lasting and impactful connections with female professionals in STEM fields.

To give you an idea of networking topics and questions that came up at this event in the past, they have included: career trajectory of representatives, how to navigate and succeed when in a position as one of the only females, how to balance work and a personal life, how to become a successful leader, and much more.
