Experience the powerful and surreal world of renowned Mexican sculptor José Sacal (1944–2018) at UC San Diego Park & Market. A UNIVERSAL MEXICAN: The Surreal World of José Sacal features emotionally resonant bronze and ceramic sculptures that reimagine iconic cultural and historical figures—such as Einstein, Frida Kahlo, Gandhi, and Don Quixote—through Sacal’s distinctive abstract lens. Known for blending surrealism with social and political commentary, Sacal’s work explores identity, justice, and the human experience with a bold, expressive style shaped by influences like Picasso and Giacometti.

Presented in collaboration with Fundación Sacal, the Consulado General de México en San Diego, and UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, this binational exhibition highlights the power of art to foster cross-cultural dialogue and civic engagement. Located on the 2nd floor of Park & Market next to the Digital Gym Cinema, the exhibition is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view the work of one of Latin America’s most visionary sculptors.
