Jan 26, 2019–Jan 26, 2019 from 5:00pm–8:30pm
The San Diego Chapter of ARCS Foundation will hold their first public lecture and social event of 2019 on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 5:00–8:30 p.m. at the UC San Diego Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club. The event will feature a networking and social event with a special book preview presented by Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, and her husband Dr. Tom Patterson, both professors and medical researchers at UC San Diego. They will share their fascinating story about successfully fighting a life threatening antibiotic-resistant bacteria that landed Patterson in the ICU for eight months and almost cost him his life. The successful protocol involved finding the right virus, aka “the perfect predator” that could kill even the most lethal bacteria. With time running out, Dr. Strathdee appealed to phage researchers all over the world for help. The San Diego Chapter of the ARCS is one of 15 chapters dedicated to helping the best and brightest United States students by providing scholar awards in the natural sciences, medicine, engineering and math. Since the San Diego Chapter was founded in 1985, $10,109,500 has been awarded to graduate and undergraduate students attending Scripps Research, San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and University of San Diego. For academic year 2018-2019, San Diego Chapter awarded $415,000 to 57 ARCS Foundation Scholars. The ticket price of $80 includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert, and parking.
