Activism and History of AAPI Studies at UC San Diego by Prof. James Lin
About this Event
Free EventThe Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies Program is honored to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the AAPI Studies Minor Program and the 20th anniversary of the Asian Pacific Islander and Asian American Heritage Celebration Month with our Emeritus Professor, James Lin (Math) who was a founding member of the AAPI Studies at UC San Diego.
Professor Lin was the driving force behind creating the minor in Asian American Studies. Back in 1985, Asian American Studies was an unknown field, often dismissed as a political movement that would disappear.
Professor Lin taught the very first course in Asian American Studies in 1986. In 1988 he was able to create the minor in Asian American Studies by convincing 9 faculty of the field’s academic legitimacy. Without this accomplishment we wouldn’t have an Ethnic Studies Department that can choose its own faculty. He will tell stories about the challenges he faced.
All UC San Diego affiliates are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.
