Please join us for an exclusive lecture and reception to celebrate the launch of the Institute for Practical Ethics at the University of California, San Diego! This event will feature special guest Dr. Beth Shapiro, Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who will deliver a talk entitled “Can We, Should We, and Will We Bring Back Mammoths?” Dr. Shapiro’s work focuses on using ancient DNA to infer evolutionary history and processes. Dr. Shapiro is the MacArthur Award-winning author of How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction, which considers the feasibility and desirability of bringing back passenger pigeons, steppe bison, mammoth and other currently extinct species. Opening Remarks by Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and Dean Cristina Della Coletta, Division of Arts and Humanities. The University of California, San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities is growing to better address important issues surrounding emerging progress in medical discoveries, scientific research, and technological innovations. As one of the signature initiatives of the Division of Arts and Humanities, the Institute for Practical Ethics (IPE) is formed as an interdisciplinary research unit within the University of California, San Diego dedicated to the goal of creating socially responsible science and policy.
