Please join us for an artist and curator conversation with Gala Porras-Kim and Ana Iwataki, around their practices and work with Commonwealth and Council, an artist-run exhibition space in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Gala Porras-Kim (b. 1984 in Bogotá, Colombia; lives and works in Los Angeles) received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. Forthcoming exhibitions will be held at the FRAC Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, France; Hab Galerie, Nantes, France; the Headlands Center for the Arts, Headlands, CA; and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Bowdoin, ME. She received the Artadia Award and Rema Hort Mann Award in 2017, Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in 2016, Creative Capital Grant and Tiffany Foundation Award in 2015, and California Community Foundation Fellowship in 2013. Ana Iwataki (b. 1989 in Los Angeles, California; lives and works in Los Angeles) is a curator, translator, and writer. She co-directed the project space Shanaynay, Paris from 2015-2017. Recent and upcoming exhibitions organized in collaboration with Marion Vasseur Raluy include Windowlicker, Balice Hertling, Paris (organized with Julie Beaufils); a solo exhibition by Luca Francesconi, 67steps, Los Angeles, California; Beloved in the Landscape, Bel Air, Essen, Germany; Nothing Recedes Like Failure, Mortadelle, Arles, France; and Some of My Best Friends Are Germs, le Doc, Paris, France. She curated the Art Viewer Screen Section in 2017 and a publication based on this program is forthcoming in 2018. Iwataki is a Space Operator at Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles. She received her BA in Art History from Pitzer College, Claremont, CA (2011) and MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Sorbonne, Paris, France (2014).
