Havis will be joined in conversation by Rabbi Philip Graubart, an award-winning novelist, essayist, and former congregational rabbi.
Allan Havis has been a member of the UC San Diego Theatre faculty for 38 years and has directed the Jewish Studies Program since 2023. An acclaimed playwright, he is the author of nineteen published plays, as well as the novels Clear Blue Silence, Maddie Q, Architects of Taj Mahal, and now October 7th. He is also a frequent opera librettist in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis and has received numerous honors, including Guggenheim, Rockefeller, McKnight, Kennedy Center, HBO, and Dramatists Guild awards.
Philip Graubart is the award-winning author of Planet of the Jews and Silwan and has published essays, short stories, and op-eds in numerous publications, including Forward, Tikkun, Moment, The Jerusalem Post, and The Times of Israel.
Rabbi Philip Graubart will interview Allan Havis about October 7th, exploring the novel's themes, inspiration, and the significance of its publication on the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks. The conversation will conclude with an audience Q&A.
