Bookmarks: The Constant Companion of Books | Exhibit
About this Event
9701 Hopkins Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093
View SpeakersUC San Diego Library is proud to support the 10th annual World Bookmark Day (WOBODA) celebration, orchestrated by the International Friends of Bookmarks. This annual event pays homage to the quiet companion of readers — the bookmark. Also known as “quitter strips,” bookmarks have served as functional counterparts to books for more than 2,000 years.
This exhibit features an assortment of unique bookmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Highlights include award-winning bookmarks handmade by students from The Preuss School UC San Diego (coming in February) and an eclectic collection of objects that have served as bookmarks, uncovered over time by the Library team responsible for lending and circulation of the Library’s collections. Visitors will also gain a better understanding of the Library’s Preservation Lab, which works to protect and conserve books and other materials — ensuring that both books and bookmarks can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Because this is the 10th anniversary of WOBODA, the International Friends of Bookmarks are celebrating with special activities, including printable bookmark designs, a bookmark raffle, and more. Visit their website to learn how you can participate.
Bookmarks: The Constant Companion of Books is on view at The Nest in Geisel Library from Saturday, January 10 to Tuesday, March 17, 2026, during the building's open hours.
