Political philosopher and Harvard Professor Michael Sandel joins us Tuesday, February 7, 2023, for an an intriguing discussion on "The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good?". Doors open at 5:30 and the event is from 6:00 to 8:00pm on the UC San Diego campus at the Hojel Auditorium.
This event is supported by the Eugene M. Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society, which sponsors public lectures in which scholars, theologians, and religious practitioners address critical issues on the relationship between religion and society and on the religious dimensions of being human. Since its inception in 1985, the Burke Lectureship has hosted more than 75 lectures at UC San Diego.
Michael Sandel teaches political philosophy at Harvard University. His books--on justice, democracy, ethics, and markets--have been translated into more than 30 languages. He has been described as “a rock star moralist” (Newsweek) and “the world’s most influential living philosopher” (New Statesman).
Sandel’s recent book, The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good?, seeks a way beyond the polarized politics of our time. It was named a best book of the year by The Guardian, Bloomberg, New Statesman, The Times Literary Supplement, Le Point (Paris), and New Weekly (Beijing).
