"Black love.” “White privilege.” “Homophobia.” “Gender ideology.”
At a time when the United States and the Church seem more polarized than ever around issues of race and sexuality, we are eager for prophetic and healing voices to show us a way forward—together!
Calling himself a “scholar-activist,” Bryan N. Massingale has, since his earliest days as a Catholic priest, courageously challenged his church’s marginalization of LGBTQ people, and is one of its fiercest public critics on racism. His groundbreaking 2010 study, “Racial Justice and the Catholic Church,” is even more urgent today when our illusion of a post-racial society has been shattered.
“America has always understood itself as a white Christian nation. That identity is being shaken,” Massingale insists. “Many white Christians are anxious about it. This is where Catholic and religious faith can make a contribution and say, ‘None of the human ways we understand ourselves really matter because deep down, we are all fundamentally children of God.’”
Our Fall 2023 Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society will host prominent moral theologian and professor Father Bryan N. Massingale, S.T.D., of Fordham University, where he holds the James and Nancy Buckman Chair in Applied Christian Ethics.
