South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world. Professor Jisoo Hwang studies the relationship between the “child penalty” – the effect of parenthood on labor market outcomes – and declining fertility using administrative data covering the entire population of South Korea. To explain the large child penalty and its increase across cohorts, Jisoo Hwang explores potential changes in the composition of mothers as well as their behavioral responses to childbirth.
