Topic: The American Dream and the China Dream: From resonance to dissonance
There has been an evolution over the past thirty years in the ways Americans and Chinese have talked about each other. On the American side, there was a basically positive mainstream discourse, but there were strands of negative discourse about immigration, elite collusion, espionage, and intellectual property theft, that came together under the Trump administration to create a new mainstream narrative. On the China side there were new aspirations to national greatness mobilized by the Xi Jinping regime that have led to a more combative discourse about America. Can we develop a more resonant accord between the American dream and the China Dream?
