China’s Good War: How Memory of World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism

China’s Good War: How Memory of World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism

Drawing on his book of the same title, Rana Mitter examines the ways in which public narratives of World War II enhance contemporary Chinese nationalism and contribute to its newfound confidence abroad. Chinese leaders once tried to suppress memories of their nation’s brutal experience during World War II. Now they celebrate the “victory”—a key foundation of China’s rising nationalism.

Speakers:

  • Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, St Cross College, University of Oxford
  • Susan Shirk, Chair, 21st Century China Center, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy
