Starting in 1992, Richard Madsen undertook pathbreaking fieldwork among Catholics in China's northern villages and in the city of Tianjin. How have Catholic and Protestant communities weathered the enormous changes since, the ups and downs of Chinese society and politics over the past three decades? In this talk, Madsen will discuss the complex path of diverse Christian communities and their current circumstances under under Xi Jinping’s “sinicization of religion” policies. The talk will be moderated by Barry Naughton.
