May 11, 2019–May 11, 2019 from 10:30am–11:30am
A reading of Daisies On Harlem's Doorstep by Sharece M. Sellem, winner of the 2019 Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition on the African American Experience. Spring of 1929 in Harlem, a season before the stock market crashed and the Great Depression paralyzed the world. Still, the streets are filled with glittering lights and for an innocent Daisy, who only wants to find her sister while four urgent women show her how to grow in concrete. The Gaffney Prize, now in its thirteenth year, awards $1000 to the winning author along with travel and lodging to participate in the play’s staged reading Saturday morning, May 11th as part of the Wagner New Play Festival at UC San Diego. Jurors for this year’s award are MFA playwrights Vivian Barnes, Dave Harris and Ava Geyer. The Theatre & Dance Department wishes to thank the work of the jurors, the Dean of Arts and Humanities, and also the Gaffney family for lending Dr. Floyd Gaffney’s name to this national event - recognizing Dr. Gaffney’s achievement in African American theatre.
