The campus and local community are invited to gather in remembrance of Professor of Literature Alain J.-J. Cohen, who passed away on Jan. 29, 2026, at the age of 82.

Over nearly six decades at UC San Diego, Professor Cohen shaped the study of film and literary theory through his groundbreaking integration of psychoanalysis, semiotics and philosophy. A distinguished scholar, dedicated teacher and practicing psychoanalyst, he authored more than 100 research articles and delivered invited lectures around the world. He also played a pivotal role in advancing film studies on campus, helping lay the foundation for what is now the major in cinematic arts and film studies.

Known for his patient mentorship and deeply attentive feedback, Professor Cohen made generations of students feel seen, heard and intellectually empowered. Beyond the classroom, he served his department and university in numerous leadership roles and curated more than 50 art exhibitions at the Faculty Club Gallery, strengthening connections between campus and community.

Please join colleagues, students, alumni and friends as we celebrate Professor Cohen’s life, scholarship and lasting impact.

The memorial will take place in the Atkinson Pavilion, followed by a reception hosted by the Department of Literature with light refreshments on the patio.
