This study, by Sampreet Goraya of the Stockholm School of Economics and coauthor, shows how caste influences who buys from whom in India, creating invisible barriers in the market. The research finds that people tend to buy from businesses connected to their own social group, which limits the growth potential of firms. Some companies try to overcome this by hiring workers from different caste groups to reach new customers. The study finds that reducing the cost of such hiring helps businesses grow and gives consumers more choice.
