Ethics, Science and Technology in San Diego: 100 programs from 2005–2017

Ethics, Science and Technology in San Diego: 100 programs from 2005–2017

Overview Since April 2005, the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology has delivered 100 programs on topics fundamentally important to residents of the San Diego region. To mark this milestone, the Ethics Center director, Michael Kalichman, will review the breadth of those programs and identify some of the common features and themes that have characterized this forum. In addition to discussing some particularly thorny issues, this meeting will be an opportunity for members of the community to reflect not only on past programs, but on new directions and themes that the Center should consider for future programming. Come and help us celebrate our centennial program. Speaker Kalichman, trained in engineering and neurophamacology, has taught research ethics for over 25 years. In addition to his role as co-founding director of the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, Kalichman is founding director of the UC San Diego Research Ethics Program (1997), the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium (2006), and the Ethics Service (2010) for the NIH CTSA-funded UC San Diego Clinical and Translational Research Institute. He has taught train-the-trainer, research ethics workshops throughout the U.S. as well as Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. With support from the Office of Research Integrity, he created one of the first online resources for the teaching of research ethics, Resources for Research Ethics Education (1999), and he leads NIH- and NSF-funded research on goals, content, and methods for teaching research ethics. Internationally, he has had lead roles with representatives of Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan in setting national research ethics agendas, and is now helping to establish the Asia Pacific Rim Research Integrity network.
