Food Justice and Community Health with The Kitchenistas of National City

Food Justice and Community Health with The Kitchenistas of National City

As part of Latinx Heritage Month, UC San Diego's Hispanic Center of Excellence and the Institute of Arts and Humanities invites you to join us for a conversation on Food Justice and Community Health with The Kitchenistas of National City.

The Kitchenistas is a passionate group of women from National City advocating for healthy food traditions to change communities and transform lives in San Diego.

Documentary Synopsis:
The Kitchenistas is a documentary film released March 2021 and airing on PBS stations across the nation. The film is about new beginnings and journeys of change through healthy food traditions. What started as a 7-week nutrition education program seven years ago in National City (CA) for women seeking healthier diets to address a family crisis of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related issues, has by 2021, become a 300+ Latina-led movement to raise the health, wellbeing, and resilience of a community. The film's goal is to inspire healthier communities across the U.S., especially in lower-income and diverse communities, placing a spotlight on timely and personal stories that show how small changes of bringing high-quality food solutions into our homes, schools, and city can lead to a sustained movement toward disease prevention and community health. The Kitchenistas are inspiring examples of community builders and advocates for "real food" and reconnection through the kitchen.
