Jennifer Crawford, PhD, is a second-year postdoctoral fellow in the VA Advanced Fellowship in Women’s Health at VA San Diego and the Department of Psychiatry in the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her mentor is Ariel Lang, PhD. Jennifer completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with a graduate certificate in Women and Gender Studies, at the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque. Her graduate research focused on risk factors for sexual victimization among college women, with a focus on the heightened risk of revictimization among those with a prior history of sexual trauma. Dr. Crawford has served on university task forces to improve violence prevention and response; designed and taught courses on gender violence; and developed clinical expertise in PTSD and women’s health. Her current research has expanded from risk factors for sexual trauma to a focus on its mental and physical health sequelae. Military sexual trauma (MST) (i.e. experienced while a servicemember) is associated with increased risk for suicide, homelessness, and poorer mental and physical health among Veterans. While the Veterans Health Administration offers evidence-supported treatments to address the mental health consequences of sexual trauma, engaging Veterans in treatment has been a challenge (i.e. initiation and completion). Dr. Crawford will present her proposed early-career grant, which seeks to characterize the patterns of care Veterans with MST experience within VA and identify potential system-level strategies for improving engagement in care that will help reduce the high-risk correlates of sexual trauma.
