ENGAGING IN POLICY-ORIENTED RESEARCH: The Study of Prison “Compassionate Release” Policies
Description: In a presentation to our division grand rounds attended by 30+ faculty, staff, and trainees, Dr. Williams will present her work on how she has developed a portfolio of research that is focused on policy addressing justice-engaged individuals. The presentation will be 45-50 minutes followed by 10-15 minutes Q&A.
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Brie Williams, Professor of Medicine in the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations, is a physician trained in internal medicine, geriatrics, and palliative care. Her research focuses on transforming prison culture to focus on the health of residents and staff, dignity, and humanity, and on bringing the science of geriatrics and palliative care to criminal justice reform. Dr. Williams directs Amend, an international training and leadership development program for correctional leaders and prison staff designed to bring a public health lens to transforming US prisons. She is also a co-director of the Aging Research in Criminal Justice Network, funded by the National Institute on Aging, which is expanding research at the intersection of aging and criminal legal system involvement.
