Global Forum—Mazotos, Cyprus: a 4th century BC shipwreck site by the book?

A lecture from Prof. Demesticha discussing the multifaceted aspects of the Mazotos shipwreck project, as a project of the Department of History and Archaeology, U of Cyprus. Eleven years ago, in 2007, a shipwreck site was reported to Cypriot authorities by local divers. Found off the island’s south coast, it consisted of an amphora assemblage, almost in the shape of a ship, lying on a flat sandy seabed. This was what remained of the ship’s cargo, wine from the island of Chios in the Aegean, dated to the middle of the fourth century BC. The ship lay almost undisturbed for 2400 years. Excavations began in 2010 and since then five field seasons have shed new light on Classical ships and their cargos. Moreover, new digital documentation techniques have been tested on the site, opening new paths to the way we investigate and analyse shipwreck sites. What is more, the Mazotos shipwreck became the platform on which maritime archaeology was developed in Cyprus where, despite very important underwater projects in the past, such as the excavation of the Kyrenia shipwreck, maritime archaeology is still in its infancy. This lecture will discuss the multifaceted aspects of the Mazotos shipwreck project, which is directed by the speaker, as a project of the Archaeological Research Unit, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Cyprus. Prof. Demesticha serves on the advisory board of the Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology, UC San Diego. The nearest visitor parking to the Great Hall on the UC San Diego campus is in the Pangea and Hopkins Parking Structures. The fee is $2/hr.
