POSTPONED.
The US/Mexico border has served as a creative catalyst for artists for more than a century, but perhaps never more than now as both the relationships and the barriers between both societies have grown. Join us for a lively and insightful discussion with three leading musicians on how they are reflecting on the border through their music, creating art that forges connections and a common community on both sides of the wall.
Moderated by radio journalist Betto Arcos, a contributor to NPR and Public Radio International’s The World, and host and producer of the podcast “The Cosmic Barrio,” the panel will feature:
- Arturo O’Farrill, multi-Grammy-winning composer, jazz pianist and bandleader, founder of the NYC-based Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, and professor of music at UCLA. His “Fandango at the Wall” was recorded at the border in Tijuana in 2018.*
- Martha Gonzalez, co-founder and lead singer of the Grammy award-winning band, Quetzal, is a Chicana Artivista, feminist music theorist, and an Assistant Professor in Chicana/o Latina/o Studies at Scripps/Claremont Colleges.
- Jorge Castillo, founder and director of the Fandango Fronterizo festival, presented each spring at the border fence in Tijuana and San Diego, and leader of the cross-border son jarocho ensemble, Radio Guacamaya.
*Hear Fandango at the Wall at the San Diego Symphony on March 14 and view a documentary film on the project at the San Diego Latino Film Festival on March 12.
