Barry Naughton

Barry Naughton is the So Kwan Lok Chair of Chinese International Affairs at the School. He is one of the world’s most highly respected economists working on China. He is an authority on the Chinese economy with an emphasis on issues relating to industry, trade, finance and China's transition to a market economy.

Naughton has written the authoritative textbook “The Chinese Economy: Transitions and Growth,” which has now been translated into Chinese. His groundbreaking book “Growing Out of the Plan: Chinese Economic Reform, 1978-1993” received the Ohira Memorial Prize, and he most recently translated, edited and annotated a collection of articles by the well-known Chinese economist Wu Jinglian. Naughton writes a quarterly analysis of the Chinese economy for China Leadership Monitor.

Hao Wang is a professor at Fudan University’s Center for American Studies and associate director of the Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China. His research focuses on U.S. political development, the domestic foundations of American foreign policy, and U.S.-China relations. He is the author of “Social Coalition and the Logic of Evolution of U.S. Grand Strategy since World War II” (Shanghai People’s Publishing House, 2016) and “From Cycles to Identity: Paradigm Innovation and Agenda Resetting in American Party Politics” (Fudan University Press, 2024). His work has appeared in leading Chinese journals of American studies, and he has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and essays on U.S. politics and foreign policy.

Victor Shih

Victor Shih is a professor at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy, where he also serves as the director of the school’s 21st Century China Center. He is an expert on the politics of Chinese banking policies, fiscal policies and exchange rate, as well as the elite politics of China. Shih is the author of two books: “Factions and Finance in China” and “Coalitions of the Weak: Elite Politics in China from Mao’s Stratagem to the Rise of Xi.” An active member of the China Data Lab, he is also constructing a large database on biographical information of elites in China, as well as the activities of the elites. He was previously a principal in the Carlyle Group.
