May 18, 2017–May 18, 2017 from 5:00pm–7:00pm
Join us for a special lecture in Challenging Conversations series, hosted by the Institute of Arts & Humanities (IAH) at UC San Diego. This event will feature guest Kelly Lytle Hernández, associate professor of history at UCLA, and author of the book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771–1965. Hernández will lecture on the subject of the novel, explaining how the City of Angels became the capital city of the world’s leading incarcerator, and unmasking how histories of native elimination, immigrant exclusion, and black disappearance drove the rise of incarceration in Los Angeles. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session, and copies of the book will be available for purchase. SUGGESTED PARKING: Pangea Parking Lot (for guests) and P357 (for those with a UC San Diego parking permit).
