Ian Cooper in conversation with Lauren Mackler: Adam D. Kamil Guest Lecture

Ian Cooper is Jordan Peele’s producing partner and the Creative Director of Monkeypaw. With a primary focus on the feature slate, Ian oversees the visual and conceptual underpinnings of all Monkeypaw projects from the early development stages through execution and release. His scope of oversight extends to all Monkeypaw ancillary projects, including books, events, and exhibitions. Ian produced Peele’s newest feature, "Nope" and is an executive producer on Henry Selick's stop-motion animated feature, "Wendell & Wild." He produced Nia DaCosta’s "Candyman" and Peele’s "Us." He oversaw the execution of the Get Out: Annotated Screenplay book; the limited edition vinyl releases of the Us, Candyman, and Nope soundtracks, and produced the Jupiter's Claim tram tour experience for Universal Studios Hollywood. Ian is a visual artist with a practice in mixed media sculpture. He holds an MFA from Bard College and has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad over the past two decades. His work has been acquired by several institutions, including the permanent collection of The Whitney Museum of American Art.

Lauren Mackler is a curator and writer based in Los Angeles. In 2010, she founded Public Fiction, a forum for staging exhibitions, performances, and programs by contemporary artists and writers, as well as a journal with the same mission in print. Mackler has organized Public Fiction exhibitions and catalogues at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2012 & 2016); Artissima LIDO, Turin (2012); the Berkeley Art Museum (2013); Frieze Projects New York (2014); the Hammer Museum (2014); the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s Schindler House (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (January 2019). She is currently the managing editor of Sublevel — the literary magazine housed in the CalArts School of Critical Studies — and has been on faculty at the School of Visual Arts in New York, the UCLA Graduate Department of Art, and Otis College of Art and Design. Mackler is a contributor to Artforum and various other publications. In 2015, she was awarded the Rome Prize by the American Academy in Rome. She co-curated the Los Angeles biennial, Made in LA 2020, at the Hammer Museum.

Adam Douglas Kamil was a UC San Diego, Visual Arts Media major with a passion for the power of media to connect people. To honor the memory of their son, who passed away in December 2009, the Kamil family has established the Adam D. Kamil Media Awards and Lecture Series. The Adam D. Kamil Guest Lecture was established to inspire undergraduate students and to provide insight into the career of an established artist working in media production.
