May 26, 2016–May 26, 2016 from 12:30pm–6:00pm
The UC San Diego Center for Healthy Aging is thrilled to announce its Inaugural Symposium will be held May 26. Key topics will be health care and housing, with an emphasis on how technology will influence each in the future. This highly anticipated symposium will showcase prominent experts from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Atkinson Hall’s Auditorium on the UC San Diego campus. David Brenner, MD, Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, and Sandra Brown, PhD, Vice Chancellor for Research Affairs, will give opening remarks. The director of the Center for Healthy Aging, Dilip V. Jeste, MD, will give an overview of healthy aging and the work of the center. Two internationally renowned keynote speakers will be featured: Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, CEO of the Harvard-affiliated, global Partners in Health; and John Feather, PhD, CEO of Grantmakers in Aging, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the experience of aging. The jam-packed program also will include two multidisciplinary panel discussions on health care and senior housing, and poster presentations by recipients of the center’s 2015–2016 Innovative Multi-Disciplinary Research and Education Pilot Grants. In a campus wide effort to address the diverse challenges and needs of the nation’s aging population, the four schools of UC San Diego (the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Rady School of Management); the four general campus divisions (Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Arts and Humanities); and four major organized research units (the Qualcomm Institute, the Institute of Engineering in Medicine, the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind, and the Stein Institute for Research on Aging) have joined to form the UC San Diego Center for Healthy Aging. It is an unprecedented collaboration and approach to addressing the issues our aging society is facing. “With the goal of breaking the traditional silos that occur within academic disciplines, we have provided an umbrella for bringing together faculty and trainees from varied departments, schools, and professional backgrounds to work collaboratively on different aspects of healthy aging,” said Dr. Jeste. “The structure and financial health of our country will depend heavily on how successfully we grow older and how we, as a society, embrace the golden years.” This symposium is being made possible through the support of UC San Diego’s: School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Qualcomm Institute, Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM), Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind (KIBM), Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI), Stein Institute for Research on Aging, and the Division of Biological Sciences. The symposium is open to UC San Diego faculty, trainees, and the community. Refreshments will be served, and a reception will follow the event. Please note that reserved parking is limited and on a first come, first served basis. For more information about this event, please email: aging@ucsd.edu or call 858-534-6299.
