Institute for Practical Ethics Special Guest Lecture ft. Gregory Kaebnick

UC San Diego's Institute for Practical Ethics invites you to the 2023 special guest lecture featuring Gregory Kaebnick entitled ”Synthetic Biology and the Reinvention of Nature” on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at 4 p.m.. The lecture will be followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m..

Speaker

Greg Kaebnick is a scholar at The Hastings Center, an independent bioethics research institute, where he edits the Hastings Center Report and leads interdisciplinary research projects that examine ethical and governance issues of emerging biotechnology, especially synthetic biology and genome editing. He is the author of ”Humans in Nature: The World As We Find It and the World As We Create It” (Oxford 2014), and he participated in a committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that developed recommendations for research on and possible use of gene drive-modified organisms. He likewise served on Co-Director John Evans’ bioethics advisory panel for Neal Devaraj’s, UC San Diego professor and Murray Goodman endowed chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, NSF-funded mirror cell work.

This lecture will be held in Atkinson Pavilion at the Faculty Club, UC San Diego.

Directions: Heading South on I-5

  • Take I-5 south to the Genesee Avenue exit
  • Turn right on Genesee
  • At the third light, turn left on North Torrey Pines Rd.
  • At the fifth light, turn left onto the Muir College Dr. (The street sign reads: Muir College Drive / UCSD)
  • Take first Right on Scholars Drive and again take first left onto Muir Lane
  • You will see parking lot #206 on your right
  • The Scholars Parking lot will be on your immediate left. The Faculty Club parking lot #206 will be slightly ahead and on your left.

Directions: Heading North on I-5

  • Take I-5 north to the La Jolla Village Drive exit and turn left at the end of the exit ramp
  • Follow La Jolla Village Drive through several lights
  • Continue as La Jolla Village Drive turns into North Torrey Pines Rd.
  • At the fifth light, turn right onto the Muir College Dr. (The street sign reads: Muir College Drive / UCSD)
  • Take first right on Scholars Drive and again take first left onto Muir Lane
  • You will see parking lot #206 on your right
  • The Scholars Parking lot will be on your immediate left. The Faculty Club parking lot #206 will be slightly ahead and on your left.

Where to Park

The Faculty Club is adjacent to campus parking lot P206 which contains 50 Club spaces. Scholars Parking Lot is much large and is the best option if P206 is full. Parking permits are required during weekdays and weekends. Members and their guests attending lunch or scheduled events may obtain permits to park in Club spaces.
