Intro to Privacy at UC San Diego (GDPR and CCPA)

Intro to Privacy at UC San Diego (GDPR and CCPA)

This session will provide an introduction to privacy concepts and privacy issues in higher ed. We will explore privacy through two recently-enacted laws, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) that was modeled largely on the GDPR. The GDPR took effect May 25, 2018. It is a sweeping privacy law that will impact how UC San Diego handles personal data of individuals, including data about applicants, faculty and staff, research participants, online learners, public databases based in the EU, etc. The recently enacted California Consumer Privacy Act will go into effect in 2020 and provide protections to residents of California. This training is ideal for anyone who handles personal data or systems that handle personal data. There will also be discussions about what this might mean for your unit’s operations, how to begin preparing, and what resources are available. Faculty, staff, and students are all welcome. Visit the Privacy Office website for more information about privacy at UC San Diego.
