Apr 23, 2019–Apr 23, 2019 from 11:30am–1:00pm
All are invited to a campus-wide meeting where Chancellor Khosla, EVC Simmons, and VC Petitt will speak about the Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative, which was launched to ensure that California’s fastest growing student population continues to feel welcome, are supported, and able to thrive at UC San Diego. The event will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at the Great Hall, Eleanor Roosevelt College from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Led by the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative is a unique opportunity to collaborate across campus to improve access and inclusive excellence for Latinx/Chicanx students, staff, and faculty. At the heart of the initiative is the desire to transform our institution by attracting, retaining, and supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student body with the goal of reflecting California’s demographics and achieving institutional excellence. What is Latinx/Chicanx? The “x” transforms the gender-specific terms “Latino” and “Chicano” into more inclusive forms of identity for men, women, nonbinary people, and those who are gender non-conforming. Latinx recognizes those whose roots stem from Latin America, while Chicanx is an identity rooted in a social justice movement that seeks to empower Mexican American and Latinx communities.
