Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil

Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil

SPONSORED BY LAURAYNE RATNER Please join the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program and UC San Diego Library for a lecture by Charles Musser on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 5–7 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required at https://hlhw_neiman.eventbrite.com. As the western world struggles with its legacies of racism and colonialism, Susan Neiman asks, “What can we learn from the past in order to move forward?” In her book, Learning from the Germans, Neiman delivers an urgently needed perspective on how a country can come to terms with its historical wrongdoings. Neiman draws from her knowledge of German history and her first-hand experiences growing up in the South during the civil rights movement. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University and has taught at the Free University of Berlin, Yale University, and Tel Aviv University. She is the director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, Germany. In 2014 Neiman was awarded the Spinozalens by the Internationale Spinozaprijs Foundation, a biennial prize recognizing international thinkers who concern themselves with ethics and society. With support from UC San Diego’s Department of Philosophy
