Making Sense of Interoception in Ecological Contexts

Making Sense of Interoception in Ecological Contexts

We will review some anatomical considerations of the interoceptive pathway and how they generate functional constraints that are coherent with the normal operation of the interoceptive system. From there, it will be discussed how the fronto-insular cortex could generate a dynamic framework (i.e. based on cross - frequency interactions) that guides behaviors consistent with allostasis. The goal is to take into account the physiology of the interoceptive pathway and the dynamics derived from it to design
ecological experiments that capture the interaction of brain-viscera, for instance, in a social context. We will also discuss Dr. Aguilar-Rivera's research efforts to develop tools to help with this endeavor.
