Facebook Event Free and open to the public. Please join us for “Digital Animalities,” a talk by Matthew Brower, Director of Museum Studies, University of Toronto. Sponsored by the UC San Diego Visual Arts Department. How are ubiquitous media forms changing the meanings and possibilities of human-animal relations? Matthew Brower, director of museum studies at the University of Toronto, examines the intersections between the rise of risk culture, digital technologies, and animal bodies in a lecture about his SSHRC funded collaborative project “Digital Animalities.” https://digitalanimalities.org/ Matthew Brower is an art historian and curator whose research examines contemporary and historical visual culture with a particular emphasis on issues of display. He is the author of Developing Animals: Wildlife and Early American Photography (Minnesota 2011) and numerous essays for books, catalogs, and journals on topics including photography and wildlife, Chinese contemporary art, and museum display. He has co-curated several exhibitions that explore significant issues in contemporary art practice. These include Mediated Memory (6th Beijing International Art Biennale, National Art Museum of China, 2015), Yonder (Koffler Art Gallery 2016), Collective Identity│Occupied Spaces (UTAC and Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, 2012), and Suzy Lake: Political Poetics (University of Toronto Art Centre, 2010).
