Mar 4, 2025–Mar 4, 2025 from 5:00pm–7:30pm
The Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego invites you to a special film screening and discussion on Tuesday, March 4 from 5-7:30pm.
Join us for a special screening of Mountains, the award-winning debut feature by Haitian-American co-writer and director Monica Sorelle. A Black Miami artist, Sorelle preserves and reimagines the cultural traditions of Miami and the Caribbean, centering the lived experiences of the African and Latin diasporas.
This powerful film follows Xavier, a Haitian construction worker in Miami, as he navigates the tensions of building luxury homes while facing the looming threat of displacement. With its poignant storytelling and evocative imagery, Mountains tenderly illuminates the intersections of race, labor, belonging, and environmental justice in South Florida.
Following the screening, Monica Sorelle will be joined in conversation by Black Miami native, actress, and founder of Black Girl Cinema, Joy Brunson, and Haitian-American playwright and Black Miami native, Phanésia Pharel, a Playwriting MFA student at UC San Diego. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Mysia Anderson from UC San Diego’s Theatre and Dance Department.
