Never on Time: Queer Experimental Asian Film & Video and the Belated Archive

Never on Time: Queer Experimental Asian Film & Video and the Belated Archive

Leeroy Kun Young Kang is an archivist, independent film curator, and artist whose work lives in the intersections of audiovisual preservation, experimental cinema, and queer and transgender history and visual culture. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU and holds an MLS from Queens College and BA in Studio Art from UC Santa Barbara. After nearly a decade on the east coast, Kang resides back home in California where he works at the film archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles. The Belated Archive is an interdisciplinary archival, curatorial, and artist collaboration which aims to uncover and recirculate works in queer experimental Asian film and video history. Kang has curated programs at film festivals, universities, and independent curatorial projects in New York City and Los Angeles for the past several years, highlighting experimental films made by queer Asian Pacific artists spanning from the 1990s through the present. In his talk, Kang will discuss the project’s curatorial methods and archival process while positioning “belatedness” as a conceptual framework that presents new temporal possibilities in how we look at archives, curation, and scholarship.
