Oct 10, 2018–Oct 10, 2018 from 5:00pm–7:00pm
Please join the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program and UC San Diego Library for a lecture by photographer Barbara Michelman exploring her solo exhibition “Past is Prologue,” a series of large photo montages inspired by her family’s Lithuanian roots on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 5–7 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required at https://hlhw-michelman.eventbrite.com Michelman’s father was born in the village of Paneriai which is the site of one of the worst massacres of Jews during World War II. For Michelman, Paneriai is a landscape of loss and silence—a silence exemplified by her father who was born there. Though he escaped the slaughter, he was haunted by the tragedy. After a trip to Lithuania, Michelman was so moved by the experience that she converted her feelings into art. Her work is a mixture of words and images, portions of old letters, documents, names of people and towns, all echoing the voices of the vanished.
