Raise the Umbrellas: A Film on Hong Kong’s Democracy Movement

Raise the Umbrellas: A Film on Hong Kong’s Democracy Movement

Acclaimed filmmaker Evans Chan 陳耀成 screens and comments on his documentary “Raise the Umbrellas,” its first full-length preview on the West Coast. Watch the trailer here. The film explores the origin and impact of Hong Kong’s 2014 pro-democracy demonstrations through the inter-generational lenses of three post-Tiananmen democratic activists alongside other cultural and social characters in the movements and pro-Beijing counter voices. Comprehensive and intimate, driven by stirring footage of a mega-metropolis riven by protest, the film lays bare the sheer political risk for post-colonial Hong Kong’s universal-suffragist ambitions that reverberates across Greater China and democratic movements around the world. Schedule:

  • 4:30 p.m. Doors Open
  • 5 p.m. Film Screening (Cantonese with English/Chinese subtitles)
  • 7 p.m. Conversation and Q&A
