DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of fresh insight and cinematic explorati
on with Professor Daisuke Miyao as we celebrate the publication of his new
est book\, Ozu and the Ethics of Indeterminacy.\n\nA leading scholar of Ja
panese cinema\, Chair of the Department of Literature\, and fellow of the
Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego\, Professor Miyao i
nvites audiences to reconsider how films create meaning. Drawing on carefu
lly curated clips from the work of Yasujirō Ozu\, his talk examines how c
inema can resist singular interpretation\, opening instead onto multiple p
erspectives and modes of experience. What does it mean to watch a film wit
hout a fixed point of view? How do images shape not only what we see\, but
how we understand the world? Through the concept of an “ethics of indet
erminacy\,” Miyao offers a nuanced and timely framework for engaging wit
h cinema in all its complexity. The presentation will be followed by a mod
erated Q&A\, offering an opportunity for deeper conversation and engagemen
 t. \n\nThis event also marks a significant moment in Professor Miyao’s s
cholarly career\, celebrating the publication of two major books in close
succession—an achievement that underscores his dynamic contributions to
the field of film studies.\n\nHosted by the Suraj Israni Center for Cinema
