Sam Wohl ‘Judas Unicorn: Artifacts’

Sam Wohl ‘Judas Unicorn: Artifacts’

April 15–19, 2019, 3–6 p.m. Performance Lecture: April 19, 7–8 p.m. Artifacts is an assembly of objects (backpacks, water bottles, tools, a severed arm, a Unicorn skull) gathered from recent performances of Judas Unicorn which alludes to a near-present where human beings are deemed invasive species. This installation re-mixes the sensorial elements of a theatrical performance, free from narrative restraints. Judas Unicorn is an ongoing, multi-formed project which employs narrative as a generative device to produce drawings, performances, films, and sculpture. The context of Judas Unicorn is inspired by a technique for controlling the population of feral goats on the Galapagos Islands. There, they create a bait-goat, called a “judas goat.” The judas goat is overdosed with chemical pheromones and used to lure feral goats out into the open where they are killed by helicopter fire. Here (in this project) Unicorns are designed to lure humans to their death in the same way. Friday’s Performance Lecture will explore the concepts, origins, forms, and allegations of this project in whose allegorical conditions we find traces of the real.
